Chilka Dal

A delicious split green dal recipe, rich in ginger flavor and great with rice or roti.

What you'll need..
  • 1/2 Cup chilka dal (Split green dal)
  • 1 Medium tomato finely chopped
  • 1 Small onion finely chopped
  • 1-2 Garlic cloves finely chopped
  • 2 Green chillis finely chopped
  • 1 Inch piece of ginger finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp Lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin powder
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp Coriander powder
  • 1/4 Tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 Tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 Tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 Tbsp oil
  • 2 Tbsp chopped cilantro leaves
  • Salt to taste
How to..
  • Boil the green dal with tomato till the dal is well cooked. I always use the pressure cooker for boiling dals but it can also be done in a non stick pot.
  • Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard and cumin seeds and wait for them to splutter.
  • Add the chopped ginger, garlic, chilli and cook for 12-15 seconds till the garlic gets fragrant.
  • Add the onions and saute for 5 mins on medium flame till the onion gets pink.
  • Add salt, chilli powder, turmeric, cumin powder and coriander powder and mix well.
  • Once all the spices are blended into the onions, add the cooked dal to it and mix well. Cover with a lid and cook for about 5-8 mins.
  • Add water as needed depending on how thick or thin you want the dal to be.
  • Mix in cilantro and lemon juice once done and serve hot.
